Spider Veins

Back to Procedures List

What are spider veins?

Spider veins refer to small veins close to the surface. Spider veins develop in persons of any age and may occur spontaneously or be caused by trauma, ultraviolet exposure or hormonal changes.

How does the laser work?

Lasers produce high intensity light that can be used to selectively heat blood vessels. A variety of machines can be used, although the effectiveness and side effects for an individual can vary, the advantage of lasers is the ability to target the blood vessel while leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged. As a result, the risk of scarring is extremely low.

Who is a candidate?

Any adult, male or female, who desires to attempt to remove or significantly lighten their spider veins.

Which areas of the body can be treated?

Lasers may be used on all areas of the body. Your technician will determine the appropriate laser for your treatment.

How many treatments are necessary?

An average of three treatments will be required at three-month intervals to produce desired results. Combination therapy can be considered and beneficial if you have small, medium and large spider veins.

How is the procedure performed?

A technician uses a hand held devise to direct the laser pulse to the skin over your spider veins. Laser energy causes your spider veins to coagulate and shrink. You are likely to experience mild discomfort similar to having a small rubber band snapping against your skin.

What should be expected during recovery from treatment?

Immediately following treatment some of the smaller veins may disappear immediately. Typically it will take between 2-6 weeks for the veins to fade. After each treatment you will see a 70% to 80% improvement in the appearance of facial spider veins and 30% to 40% improvement in leg spider veins.

When will results be apparent?

Laser treatment may cause minor bruising that usually improves within a week but often recovery is immediate. Regardless of treatment you should anticipate the development of new spider veins over time, just as you would of your spider veins had not been treated. Spider veins therapy treats current spider veins but does not prevent new ones.
